
Meet Marlene Merrill:
Born near Chicago and educated at Purdue University and Illinois State University, Marlene first moved to Kansas in 1977. Marlene worked as a school psychologist in central Kansas and moved to Topeka in the 1980’s to work on her doctorate at University of Kansas. She was awarded that degree in 1991. Marlene came to Lawrence to live and work in 1992.
Lawrence and the community are very important to Marlene. She has been very active in her church, community groups, and many organizations, such as Lawrence Civic Choir. Marlene is a graduate of Leadership Lawrence. Marlene was appointed for six years (2001-2007) on the Lawrence Arts Commission where she served two years as Chair. She is currently President of the Civic Choir board.
Marlene is currently employed as a Research and Testing Specialist for the Kansas City Kansas public schools. Marlene formerly worked for the Lawrence school district as Director of Assessments and Grants.
Marlene has two children and three grandchildren. Her daughter, Angelina is married, lives in San Francisco and has a daughter who is 19 months old. Her son, Lee, lives in Lawrence with his wife, Leaa, and two daughters: Kaleigh who is almost four and Harper who is one year old.\
Marlene wants to be a School Board member because she believes that education prepares children for life. Marlene has proven success in developing innovative educational programs.
Marlene will provide common sense leadership. She is a consensus builder and works effectively with teachers, administrators, civic groups, elected officials and the business community.
Marlene has commitment to our students and to our schools. Marlene has the courage to make the tough decisions and will work with others for the good of all students.
